Pregnancy Q & A

Why is prenatal care so important during pregnancy?

If you’re pregnant, expert prenatal care is essential – whether this is your first or third child. Each pregnancy is a unique experience, and proper health screenings and support during the process help keep you and your baby healthy.

Regular screening tests and checkups at Women’s Health Partners of the Permian Basin allow Dr. Bridges to detect problems (should they occur) early and manage them before they become serious. She also provides you with lifestyle recommendations to protect your health and your baby’s health.

How often are pregnancy visits?

Dr. Bridges provides a customized visitation plan for your pregnancy, depending on your health, the baby’s condition, and your needs. In general, however, you can plan on the following schedule if you have a healthy pregnancy.

  • Once each month for weeks eight through 28
  • Twice each month for weeks 28 through 36
  • Weekly for weeks 36 up until delivery

A high-risk pregnancy requires more frequent visits.

What is a high-risk pregnancy?

Women who are more likely to develop complications during the nine months of pregnancy or delivery are deemed “high-risk.” Factors that contribute to a high-risk pregnancy include:

  • A baby with health complications
  • If you have a pre-existing condition such as diabetes
  • Being older than 35 or younger than 17

Dr. Bridges evaluates any pregnancy risks according to ultrasound results, your family and health history, and blood test showings.

What should I expect at pregnancy appointments?

At your prenatal visits, the team at Women’s Health Partners of the Permian Basin monitors your baby’s heart rate, checks your blood pressure and weight, measures your belly, and answers any questions or concerns you may have. At various times during your pregnancy, you’ll also undergo specific blood tests, urine tests, and ultrasounds. Dr. Bridges may also recommend genetic testing.

What after delivery care is provided?

Once born, a pediatrician handles your baby’s care. You, however, continue to receive oversight from Dr. Bridges. She ensures you’re healing properly and removes any stitches if you had a C-section delivery. She also reviews your overall physical and mental health in the postnatal period.
